Chapter 58: Early Morning News

Kim was not thrilled when the ringing phone woke her up.  She felt like she had barely slept the night before and she did not want to move.  But the phone rang again.  She turned off the baby monitor so she didn't wake Marlena, picked up the phone, and answered with a sleepy "Hello?"

"Kimberly?" came her mother's voice through the phone.

"Hi, Mama," she mumbled, hoping the sound of her voice would cause Caroline to keep this short.

"I have the most wonderful news," Caroline announced.  When Kim did not reply, she went ahead and delivered it.  "We found Sydney, and she's safe and healthy."

It actually took Kim a moment for that to register.  Sydney?  Sydney who?  Then it hit her.  Sydney was Sami's missing baby, Marlena's granddaughter.  "Oh my god," she said.  She started to sit up, but the room began to spin so she let her head fall back against the pillow.

"Kimmie, are you all right?"

"Yeah, I'm fine.  Just got a little side effect of the chemo."  She silently wondered if her brain was going with it.  "That's great news, Mom.  I have to tell Marlena and have her call Sami."

"Marlena will be so happy," Caroline said.  "You'll tell her right away?"

"Of course, Mom."

"And how are you doing?"

"I'm okay," Kim answered.  "Marlena and John arrived last night and are taking good care of me.  And Andrew's turning out to be a pretty good nurse.  I never would have guessed that."

"I can come out there, Kimmie."

"You don't have to, Mama.  Everything really is under control.  Marlena's insisting on staying for awhile, so whatever happens, someone will be here."  Kim loved her mother, but having her hover over her 24-7 would be a bit much.  Caroline also had the pub to run, and could not afford to shut it down for an extended time period.  "When it's time for the surgery you should come.  The doctors say we'll know soon if anyone is a match."

"I know," Caroline said.  "I just worry about you."

"Thanks, I know you do.  But you know me.  I'm gonna lick this."  Kim glanced at the clock, which read 7:45.  "Listen, Mama, I want to get off the phone and find Marlena.  She'll want to call Sami, and probably Roman, right away."

"Okay, Kimmie, but remember that I'm here for you."

They said their goodbyes and Kim hung up the phone.  She felt exhausted and just wanted to go back to sleep.  She figured Marlena, if she was awake, probably felt the same way after the night before, but the news was too important to hold back.  Kim reached for the plastic monitor that Andrew had placed on her nightstand and turned it on.  Then she pulled it close to her face and spoke in the loudest voice she could muster.

"Paging Dr. Black.  Paging Dr. Marlena Black."

In the distance she heard a faint sound, possibly -- no probably -- a shriek.  Kim began laughing and was still laughing when Marlena entered the room, leaned against the doorway, and crossed her arms.  "I'm sure you found that quite amusing.  You know I had that thing right next to my pillow.  I jumped about five feet off the bed."

Kim immediately stopped laughing.  "I'm sorry, but I think you'll forgive me.  My mother just called with some amazing news.  They found Sydney, and she's fine."

Marlena gasped and then clapped one hand over her mouth.  "Really?  You mean it?"

"Yes," Kim said, feeling tears fill her eyes.  "She's safe and with Sami."

"Oh my god," Marlena said loudly, slumping against the wall.  She cupped her face in her hands.

"Hey," came a voice from behind Marlena.  John came racing up the stairs, a look of deep concern on his face when he saw his wife.  "Doc, what's going on?"

She threw herself at John and wrapped her arms around him.  "Sydney's alive, John.  She's really alive."

John gave Kim a questioning look.  She just nodded, not bothering to wipe her tears of joy.  John's face broke into a huge grin as he picked up Marlena and swung her around.  "That's the best news ever!"

As John let go of Marlena, she looked at him.  "I need to call Sami.  Right away."  She glanced at Kim.  "Are you--"

"I'm fine," Kim said, cutting her off.  "Go.  Shoo."  As she watched Marlena leave the room, she recalled the feelings that overwhelmed her on the day when Shane told her that he had found Andrew.  She had never felt such powerful joy nor such immense relief.  It had been as if the past year of fear and doubt had disappeared in an instant.  Now, even as she delighted in the current news, Kim felt a small pang of sadness as she remembered that moment.  That day her love for Shane was limitless and she believed that nothing could ever separate them again.  During that nightmare she experienced when Andrew had been kidnapped, Shane had been her rock, providing her strength to get through most every obstacle and always fighting her attempts to push him away.

She could really use that strength now.

"Hey, Sis," John said, crouching down beside her bed.  "You okay?"

"I'm happy for Marlena and Roman and Sami.  It's just . . . it made me think about when we found Andrew.  How happy and perfect everything seemed.  And I keep thinking how stupid I was to let that get away."  She wiped away some tears.  "Silly to be thinking about that right now, I know."

John shook his head.  "It's not silly.  What you and Shane had was very special.  Most people never get a chance at love like that, even for a minute."

"Well we had it," she said, ruefully.  "And we threw it away, didn't we?"

"Hey now.  Don't talk like that."  He pulled her into a hug.  "You've got to think positive.  We just got fantastic news, Sis."

"I know, I know."  She took a few deep breaths, savoring the feel of his arms around her.  "I
should be happy, shouldn't I?  It's just. . . ."  She paused before finally confessing what she had tried for a long time to deny.  "Aw, hell . . . I miss him, John.  I miss Shane."

John squeezed her a little tighter.  "I know, Sis, and I promise you I'm going to find him and bring him home."

You're welcome, and a reciprocal thanks for commenting. As I mentioned in the background post on siblings, I loved Kim's and JoRoman's relationship. (All of the "Roman" clips I linked were from the time John thought he was Roman, because Kim did not interact that much with Wayne Northrop's Roman because their time on the show did not overlap all that much. Well, she did shoot Roman in the head that one time . . . .) I think that JoRoman and Kim really worked worked well as siblings. He always seemed to know exactly what to say to her and really seemed to be the almost-perfect supportive brother.
